Director Barry Jenkins followed up his best picture winning film Moonlight with the equally impressive If Beale Street Could Talk. Emotionally charged from the start, it follows the tragic story of Tish and Fonny's childhood love in New York in the 1970s. Their romantic bliss is shattered when Fonny is falsely accused of sexual assault and Tish must prove her innocence. Regina King co-starred in and won an Academy Award for her powerful performance as Tish's strong-willed mother. Coincidentally, If Beale Street Could Talk is based on a novel by James Baldwin, whose writings are the subject of the aforementioned I Am Not Your Negro.

Baby Rosmarins (1968)

Serpico (1973)
